Drain Fields

The wastewater in the septic system for your property has four main components:

1. Building (where it originates)
2. Septic tank (where it collects and separates)
3. Distribution box (where it is diverted into one of three or four pipes)
4. Drain field (where it is finally deposited)

The last component, or drain field, is one of the most important. When the sludge and scum layers separate in the septic tank, gravity pulls the lighter materials out of the tank gradually through perforated pipes. These pipes are buried in trenched filled with gravel. From there, Mother Nature does the rest of the job as the wastewater is absorbed back into the ground.

The size of the drain field just depends on how permeable the ground is. If it is composed primarily of hard, clay-like soils, the drain field will need to be much larger.
