Gas Vents

Vents are installed in the drainage system to prevent problems of high pressure in the system. They are an essential part of the drainage system and if clogged, can create serious problems.

Pressure in a drainage system builds as sewer gasses accumulate. To curb this, a vertical vent pipe is installed. In most buildings, the vent pipe leads directly to the roof, where sewer gases are emitted and dissipate into the atmosphere. Although there are exceptions to the rule, virtually every plumbing fixture must have an attached vent.

If the toilet water bubbles after it has been flushed or the bathroom smells especially foul, these are good indicators of a blocked vent pipe. Leaves, ice, and sometimes even small animals can get caught in the pipe.
