The water main is the network of pipes through which water is delivered. This is the last stage of the water distribution network, a process that begins at a reservoir and ends when it comes out of your tap.

The water main needs pressure in order to transport the water to where it needs to go. This is achieved in a number of ways, including by the use of a pump, gravity, or compressed air. Many problems with the water main are that there are losses in pressure. Low water pressure in the main could be the indication of a leak at some point in the pipe. Water mains, like all pipes, are also subject to corrosion.
