Leaks
Despite what people may tell you, no one kind of pipe is completely leak-proof; any and all pipe systems are subject to leaks. Leaks can occur at any time for a number of reasons. Here are some of the common causes for leakage:
Poor Workmanship: Unfortunately, most leaks are the result of shoddy workmanship when the pipes were installed or repaired. This most often happens when the pipe is not soldered correctly.
Pressure: High water pressure over long periods of time can be too much for pipes. High-pressure leaks should be dealt with immediately because of the rapid loss of water. Also,
underground pipes are subject to pressure from the overlying dirt or structures (see
slab leaks).
Intrusions:Tree roots and other intrusions are another common source for breaks in the pipe.
Corrosion: No matter where your property is located, your pipes are subject to corrosion in some form or another. This also largely depends on how high the pH level is in the public supply.
Polybutylene pipe systems are extremely susceptible to leakage. If you suspect that your system may be polybutylene, click
