Locating

The very first thing to do when assessing the problem of a leak is to locate the pipe. Pipe systems are found in a number of places, including under the ground, under foundations, and within walls. The type of locating to be done will vary depending on the general area where the leak has occurred.

For more information on different types of leaks see these resources:

In recent years, an electronic leak detection system has been developed and implemented. The system makes use of a series of sensors placed at intervals along the pipe. These sensors monitor sounds within the pipe and are triggered by anomalies. Since most systems do not have this, the most common way to locate the leak is to have a look at the plans for the property to determine the layout of the plumbing system then look for physical cues such as saturation to determine the exact or approximate location of the leak. Rainforest technicians work closely with maintenance supervisors to ensure that this is done correctly.

In many cases, demolition or excavation will be necessary to expose the pipe for repairs. In any case, water will need to be shutoff for a short period of time to allow for effective repairs to be completed.
