Wastewater naturally creates a lot of gases, and these gases do not smell very pleasant. Decomposing organic material in the
pipes and
septic system mostly causes the gases. Having a sewer smell throughout your home can be a health risk to you and your family.
What compounds are
present in sewer gas?
Methane (CH4) is a product of the fermentation of sewer sludge, and when present in abundance, poses an explosion risk or even a possibility of asphyxiation if there is enough to displace oxygen in a non-ventilated area. Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) gas has a rotten-egg smell, and may also be present if you detect a sewer smell in your home. Possible health risks associated with contact with Hydrogen Sulfide are bacterial infection of the sinuses. Depending on the source of the gas and the local humidity, mold spores may also be present in sewer gases.
What are some causes of sewer smell in my home?
Here are some examples of things found to lead to a sewer smell problem:
- A toilet with a bad seal
- Sewer piping joint leaks
- Sulphur-type gas odors, traced to gases or chemicals in water supply
- Well water contaminants
- Bacterial contamination present in the water heater
Are there measures in my home to prevent to presence of sewer gas?
In your sink drain, there is what is called a p-trap. The p-trap has a bend in it that blocks the gas from coming back up out of the drain and into the
bathroom or
kitchen. The
toilet is also sealed to the ground using bolts and a wax ring. There are also vents that are attached to the drainage systems in the home that direct the gas to an outlet on the roof.
If there is a sewer smell coming from any place in your home, it may be because one of these preventative features may not be working correctly. Rainforest Plumbing & Air technicians are trained to diagnose and treat these problems.
