Misting systems are a common and popular way to keep cool here in Arizona, especially during those blazing summer months. They are inexpensive and reliable and though they do an amazing job at cooling, the way they do it is actually quite simple. Misting systems are a form of evaporative cooling similar to that of swamp coolers.

The process that a misting system relies on to cool the air is called flash, or partial, evaporation. Flash evaporation happens when water is highly pressurized and moved through a tube where it is forced through tiny openings on the tube. In misting systems, these are usually steel nozzles with openings with a width of around 5 micrometers. The result is a micro-fine mist with drops so small that they instantly evaporate.

The mist produced by flash evaporation is very effective- in just seconds, it can reduce the surrounding air temperature by as much as 35 degrees F! Backyard patio misting systems are most effective when they are mounted 8 to 10 feet off the ground.
