Bathrooms
For some, bathrooms are perhaps the best rooms in the house. People looking to build a new home or remodel an older one often find that designing and decorating the bathroom can be the most enjoyable part of the process. In this section, we will discuss some of the things to look for when choosing fittings for that room of rooms. We'll talk about three main parts: sinks and faucets, tubs and showers, and toilets.
Today's market for bathroom fixtures is full of new and exciting features. Some like to go for the colorful and exotic, others prefer to take a chic, Eurostlye approach, while still others are looking for a quaint, old-fashioned washroom. One thing is for sure- you have a lot of choices so be sure to analyze your likes and dislikes as well as your budget before you head to the showroom.
First, let's talk about sinks. Traditionally, there are two main types of sinks: pedestal and wall-hung, and lavatory (in-counter) sinks. Pedestal sinks have a very distinct and bold look, and look almost more like a piece of art than a place to wash your hands. Wall-hung sinks have the same effect and are easily accessible to disabled persons. Lavatory sinks have a Victorian feel to them and are especially nice because of the cabinet and counter space they provide. Your best bet as far as material goes is vitreous china, always a classic and very easy to coordinate. Porcelainized steel and cast iron are also available as well as cultured marble. Tubs and showers also come in a wide variety of styles. For the most part, conventional bathtubs are recessed- they are designed to have three sides backed up to the walls or "hidden" and the fourth side exposed. They also are typically, shower/tub combos however, given the sloping sides of the tub, these are not very safe. Other options include sunken tubs and whirlpools. Modular shower units are available that feature the walls, heads and knobs in one package. Many modern showers are being designed to feature multiple heads, including an overhead "rainfall" fixture and some even eliminate the need for a shower door. For more info, please see

Finally, let's talk about the toilet- arguably, both the most essential and popular fixture in the bathroom. Toilets are usually made of vitreous china and come in a range of styles. These include the traditional close-coupled model with the tank mounted to the bowl, which sits on the floor as well as contemporary styles that combine the tank and bowl into one piece mounted to the wall. There are also two flushing styles, gravity-assist and pressure-assist, the latter being more economical. Most home toilets feature the gravity-assist flush, while commercial establishments opt for the pressure-assist due to building codes. For more info, please see
