Washing Machine

The washing machine is another one of those big machines in the house that we tend to take for granted. However, it is a complex machine, with many parts that all have to work together in order to get the grass stains out of your jeans. Since the washing machine has so many different yet related parts, we will only talk about its plumbing features.

First are the water lines. There are two of these, one hot and the other cold. The two lines are hooked up to the solenoid valve, which controls how much of which temperature is released into the washing machine. These can open one at a time or simultaneously, depending on the desired temperature. Right before the hose feeds into the tub, it goes through a device called the anti-siphon. This device prevents the backflow of rinse water into the home's main water supply.

From here, the water is fed into the tub via an inlet. An overflow port is connected to the pipe and allows excess water to flow out onto the floor instead of flooding the machine and possibly damaging the motor. Throughout the wash and rinse cycles, the motor changes directions. This makes the pump reverse directions as well and this is how the washing machine retains water during the wash cycle and drains it during the rinse cycles.
