The objective however, is the same: develop a way to pass water through a medium that will either trap or replace contaminants. Reverse osmosis systems and water softeners are great examples of two different types of water filters.

Home water filters incorporate the same basic principles as large-scale water purification done at the municipal level. And, despite what many people tend to believe, they do a pretty good job at removing contaminants.
