Filtration
Unfortunately, not all public water supply is adequately drinkable. Depending on where you live, you might not even have access to the public water supply but instead rely on a well source. In these cases, you probably use a water filter to produce potable water.
Water can be filtered in a number of different ways including using media filters, screen filters, disk filters, slow sand filter beds, rapid sand filters, and cloth filters. The objective however, is the same: develop a way to pass water through a medium that will either trap or replace contaminants.
Reverse osmosis systems and
water softeners are great examples of two different types of water filters.
Home water filters incorporate the same basic principles as large-scale water purification done at the municipal level. And, despite what many people tend to believe, they do a pretty good job at removing contaminants.
